The Strategic Importance of Freight Forwarding
Rwanda's landlocked geography makes efficient freight forwarding essential for economic development. Forwarders serve as expert intermediaries who organise shipments, contract with carriers, and navigate the complex logistics network that moves goods from manufacturers to final destinations. The recent entry of MSC — through its AGL subsidiary — demonstrates Rwanda's growing importance as a premier East African logistics hub.
Infrastructure Driving Growth
Rubavu Port on Lake Kivu now has a cargo handling capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year, significantly reducing transport costs for DRC-bound cargo. The upgraded Rusumo International Bridge allows two-lane traffic with 180-tonne load capacity, and One Stop Border Posts (OSBPs) have reduced cargo truck clearance time from four hours to approximately 30 minutes. The Rusumo-Kayonza Road upgrade has reduced travel times, transport costs, and road accidents by over 60%.
Growth Drivers & Professional Development
Rwanda aims to nearly double agricultural export earnings from $839 million to more than $1.5 billion by 2028/29, driving significant demand for freight services. The CCFL programme has produced 1,917 graduates in customs and freight logistics since 2008, ensuring professional standards across the industry. Cold chain expansion for pharmaceuticals — including BioNTech vaccine manufacturing in Rwanda — and perishable agricultural exports is creating major new specialised freight opportunities.
Economic Impact
Efficient freight forwarding reduces the cost of doing business, enhances competitiveness, creates employment, and strengthens regional EAC integration. MSC's decision to establish its Africa headquarters in Rwanda will create more than 300 jobs and strengthen Rwanda's connectivity with international trade lanes. When cargo moves efficiently and cost-effectively, economic opportunity flows to all sectors of the economy.
Freight forwarding has emerged as a cornerstone of Rwanda's economic transformation, connecting businesses to international markets and supporting industrial growth across East Africa.
